International Intellectual Property Protection
Wednesday, January 22, 2025 (9:00 AM - 12:00 PM) (MST)
Description
Since the advent of the internet, international trade has opened a lot to the point that almost every company is interacting with consumers and/or businesses from other countries. Unless we all sell widgets, every product (and even some services) has some sort of intellectual property integrated into it. Intellectual property is defined as intangible property subject to ownership which generally is of the mind. Examples include patents, trademarks, copyright and trade secret. Generally it is protect it or lose it. Protecting it in selected countries around the world can be complicated, multi-jurisdictional and multi-dimensional, but not protecting it can be catastrophic.
This course will begin with an overview of the types of intellectual property and the methods to get a wrapper of protection in the United States. It will then look at a series of cases of how attorneys and business experts determine how to protect products as they travel through the international supply chain and commerce, before looking at the tools available to maximize intellectual property protection for participants at a minimum of price. At the end of the course, the participants should be familiar with: the types of intellectual property protection tools available in the US and world, how companies weave those intellectual property tools to protect their products worldwide and perhaps with the help of counsel, how they can also.
