The is a fabled saying in business that brand is everything and everything is brand. In the US, registered trademarks protect brands (but only in the US, and sometimes but not always unregistered trademarks can also protect brands). International trademark attorneys can use US registered trademarks to perfect filings in other international jurisdictions for brand protection in those jurisdictions. But that is not always the way to obtain international brand protection and sometimes other types of legal protection, such as copyright protection get in the way of trademark rights. Sound complicated?
Through exploring the facts and legal rulings in cases involving Fender’s efforts to protect the iconic Stratocaster guitar shape and Patagonia’s trademark dispute with performer Patti Gonia, Denver based international trademark expert Steven Weigler will help demystify the complicated world of brand protection, and explain how trademark strategy can extend far beyond names and logos, touching everything from product design and brand identity to marketing and customer perception.
During this session, we’ll explore:
• What trademarks can and cannot protect• How businesses establish and defend trademark rights• Common branding mistakes that can lead to legal disputes• Practical strategies for reducing trademark risk• Key lessons from recent, real-world trademark cases
Join us for an engaging discussion that translates complex trademark concepts into practical guidance you can apply immediately to your business.
